Tips For Planning Your Next Big Hunting Adventure

April 23, 2020 by madoutdoorist Leave a Comment

Hunting is not just one of the most adventurous trips, it’s also a popular fun sport. Safety is key when planning a hunting trip. You should also make it a fun outing for you and your group. Keep reading to find helpful tips on planning a successful big hunting adventure.

Tip #1: Determine Your Preferred Game

The first step in planning a successful hunting trip is to determine what animal you want to hunt. In this case, you have varieties to choose from and they include deer, elk, and birds. If it is a group hunting adventure, you should seek ideas from others regarding the game you should all go hunting for. However, ensure the game is in season and find out if there are limitations. For instance, there are times hunters cannot exceed a particular number of games in one hunting outing.

Tip #2: Decide on a Location

Once you determine what game to hunt, the next item in your planning list should be what location you should go hunting. For example, you can choose to hunt in a remote area and erect tents to camp in. Some people may choose a more populated area as their hunting location. In this case, they would lodge in hotel rooms or other available accommodations.

Tip #3:  Go with a Guide

Also, when planning a hunting adventure, it’s a good idea to hire a guide. It is a great way to increase the chances of a successful hunting trip - it does matter whether you are a seasoned or newbie hunter. Research a potential guide to be sure that the person is very familiar with your hunting location and has performed excellently with previous clients. One of the best ways to find a good hunting guide is through referral. Ask any adventurous hunter to refer you to an experienced hunting guide.

Tip #4: Hunt in a Group

Group hunting comes with more advantages than solo hunting. First of all, you can withstand different odds because others will be there to help out when something goes wrong. So, you can invite your friends or other hunters to join you in your next big hunting adventure. You should brainstorm with your group members on how to make your hunting trip a huge success.

Tip #5: Pack the Right Gears, Equipment and Items

It’s very important to bring the right hunting tools and necessities with you. First, you should bring the right weapon and ammunition for the type of game you want to hunt. If you are confused about the right gun or weapon for you to go along with, you should seek help from a seasoned hunter or a local hunting expert. Generally, the following necessities should be included in your list of hunting gears and equipment;

  • Standard camping gear – e.g. a tent and a sleeping bag.
  • Matches or lighter or other fire starters
  • Suitable clothing in case the weather changes
  • A hunting or survival knife
  • Hunting rope
  • Food and water
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle
  • A headlamp or waterproof light source
  • Two-way radio or a cell phone in a waterproof case
  • …and so on

Tip #6: Check the Hunting Law Guiding Your Area

Obeying the hunting laws in your area is very important as you wouldn’t want to get into trouble with the law enforcement officials. First, ensure the game is in season. Also, you should possess a valid hunting license and make sure your hunting buddies comply to the law as well. And, if you do not have permission to hunt on private properties, do not trespass.

Tip #7: Stay Safe

Safety is the utmost priority when planning a hunting adventure. You and your hunting buddies shouldn’t pick up a weapon if you have not reviewed the safety requirements.  Be sure that your hunting buddies can use their weapons very well and can set the safety features on their hunting weapons. Another important safety check for you and your hunting pals is the right hunting outfit. Everyone should be outfitted in orange color hunting gear. You want to make sure everyone is visible and won’t be mistaken for games by other hunters.

It’s a great idea to make your hunting trip known to family members or other people who are not part of the hunting trip. In essence, tell one or more people your hunting location, number of people going with you, and other important details. This can help quicken a search or provide solutions faster in case something goes wrong. The person with these details can spread the word and involve others in seeking help for you and your group if need be.

Make sure all the weapons are gathered in one place after use. Everyone should make his whereabouts known to others at all times. No one should just wander away from others without saying where they are headed to in the woods.

Tip #8: Bring Navigational Gears

Wandering far away from your main hunting zone is not uncommon during a hunting trip. This is why it is necessary to take navigational gears and tools with you on a hunting adventure. Typical examples of such gears are a map and a compass. It’s also a good idea to take an emergency weather radio with you on your hunting trip.

So, as you prepare for your next big hunting trip, take advantage of these tips to plan the trip.
